CIVIC THEATRE, Tallaght, March 29

Second Age, Ireland’s award winning classics theatre company, starts 2012 with one of Shakespeare’s greatest and bloodiest plays. Expect a fast-paced thriller, with a sumptuous design, and high-octane physical performances, touring nationwide to 8 venues from February 2 until March 29.

Macbeth promises to be an arresting and vivid take on one of the greatest tragedies of all time. The play is directed by David Horan, whose most recent Second Age production, Dancing at Lughnasa, was described by The Irish Times as ‘the best show in town’.

David Horan has been making considerable waves in the theatre world recently. Other previous credits include Tall Tales Theatre Company’s production of Moment, which was one of the smash hits of 2011 touring both nationally and to London’s Bush Theatre. He has been nominated for an IFTA award for his writing on the “The Importance of Being Whatever” for RTÉ.

David has assembled an exciting cast for Macbeth, including Will Irvine as Macbeth, and Maeve Fitzgerald as Lady Macbeth, both of whom he has worked with previously during the successful run of Moment.

The strong cast includes many award winning actors. Maeve Fitzgerald has been nominated for numerous awards including: Best Actress Irish Times Theatre Awards, Best Supporting Actress Off Westend Awards, and has won both Absolut Fringe Festival’s Best Actress award and Best Supporting Actress in the Irish Times Theatre Awards. Not only is there an impressive cast but the design team is also a multi-award winning team with Maree Kearns designing both Set and Costumes who is a previous Irish Times Best Set Design winner. Lighting will be designed by Sinead McKenna who has previously taken the Best Lighting Design award at the Irish Times Theatre Awards, and Philip Stewart, a previous Best Sound Design Award Nominee. To complete the design team, Bryan Burroughs will be responsible for the Movement Direction.

Many of the cast may already be known to audiences through their work on television. Damian Kearney who plays the Porter was recently on our screens in the hit RTÉ Show Love/Hate and inThe Wind That Shakes The Barley. Marie Ruane is currently starring in the new series of RTÉ’s Raw.

Fair is foul and foul is fair inside the mind of this ambitious and political Macbeth, who along with his designing wife, chooses to take destiny by the throat. Horan’s focus in this production is on the young ambitious Macbeth couple. Horan believes that previous productions have often focused on portraying the marriage as barren and infertile, but Horan believes that there are clues in the text that suggest that Lady Macbeth has had a child in a previous marriage. While staying faithful to the text, Horan’s production will examine new approaches and perspectives through innovative, theatrical expression. The three witches, traditionally played by women or portrayed as hideous hags will instead be played by men as dead soldiers.

It is Horan’s intention to take the artifice out the production, to let the audience see the mechanics of the play, and to remove all sense of pretence as an exercise in a modern, experimental approach to Shakespeare’s timeless classic.

Some performances of Macbeth will be captioned and audio described for audiences with visual and hearing impairment. . These will be facilitated by Arts & Disability Ireland, the sole provider of audio description and captioning services for live performances in the Republic of Ireland, with funding from the Arts Council.

The next World Conference for the Hard of Hearing will be held in Norway, 25th – 28thJune 2012.

The conference venue is located in the second largest and most beautiful city in Norway, Bergen. It is a very special city with a lot of charm, where you will find “everything” in a short walking distance.

Bergen has given a warm welcome to visitors for more than 900 years. “Bryggen”, in the harbour, has become a symbol of the cultural heritage and has gained a place on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. The city is surrounded by seven mountains. You can get to the top of two of them and have a marvellous view of the city.

Bergen is called “The Gateway to the Fjords”. The city is surrounded by one of the world’s most spectacular tourist attractions – the Norwegian Fjords, which have now been included in UNESCO’s World Heritage List. Bergen is also the starting point for a cruise along the Norwegian coast which will take you all the way up to the most northern city in the world. The Norwegian fjords was on Oct 21 2009 voted the No 1 Travel Destination in the word by The National Geographic Traveler Magazine. You will hence have a lot of possibilities to combine the conference with a wonderful vacation.

The planning of the conference has started and we can already now promise you a very interesting few days. The main theme will probably be “A Better Life”, with several well qualified and interesting speakers.

The venue for the conference will be The Grieg Hall, a Culture and Conference center having its name from the famous Norwegian composer, Edvard Grieg. It is located in the city centre of Bergen, within walking distance from all hotels, sights and restaurants.

Upcoming news and conference developments will be posted at this web site, so please remember to bookmark this web site.

We are glad and proud to invite you to Bergen in 2012, to a conference which will give you new knowledge which can give you a better life as hard of hearing. You will be able to interact with several hundred participants from all over the world, in a destination where it almost never get dark at that time of the year and in a picturesque city which will offer you beautiful and interesting experiences!
