IHHA Visit to the Seafarer in the Abbey on Saturday February 6th 2010

Take a look at our photos from our last trip to the IHHA captioned performances at the abbey. The play was "The Seafarer". This outing takes place every 2nd month and is a great success for hard of hearing people. Keep an eye out for our next visit and be sure to book your place.

Conor McPherson's play "The Seafarer has been a huge success for him on the New York stage and in London and has won the Olivier award for playwrights. He directed the present run at the Abbey himself.

The actors were wonderful and the Abbey was packed. As this was the play's last performance there were also many people in the audience standing to show their appreciation.

But for me, while I thought the acting and production was superb, the content was just too familiar and had been done too many times. I no longer want to watch drunks on stage revelling in their alcoholism, loneliness and failed marriages. The card player who turns out to be the devil coming for his payment of Sharkey's soul felt too contrived to me.

Even so, a great theatrical afternoon was had by all and much discussion followed as we adjourned to a nearby café for coffee and cake.

Always an outing not to be missed!
