Glasnevin Cemetery  visit

Saturday 27th August

The IHHA had a guided tour of Glasnevin cemetery on the 27th August.  We had a wonderful guide who totally brought alive the lives of the people buried there.  She had a wonderful voice and made sure we could all hear her.

We learned that Danial O’Connell raised the finance in the 19th century for a graveyard for all the people of Dublin and the surrounding areas who could be buried there whether rich or poor, protestant or catholic.  His tomb in Glasnevin is worthy of the great man.  We also learned the DeValera wanted to be buried in a normal plot with a small gravestone with the rest of his family.  Many more interesting titbits were offered by our guide and it whetted our appetite to go back again for more.  And that’s without even touching on the wonders of the museum!  Don’t miss our next outing there.
